Virgin Media Review

Virgin Media is currently the only provider of digital cable TV in the UK. As Virgin Media deliver multiple services through their fibre optic network - voice calls and high speed broadband as well as digital TV - you can save money by signing up for several services at once. Just paying the monthly rental on a Virgin Phone line for example sees you getting the Virgin Media TV M pakcage for free. As fibre optic cable is required to deliver digital TV to the home, all Virgin Media customers pay line rental on the cable itself no matter what combination of services they sign up for. Additionally, you'll have to live in a cabled area in order to be able to receive Virgin Media TV.

Virgin Media's digital TV packages are grouped into four separate subscriptions, M, M+, L and XL. The M package gives you access to 45 digital TV channels including Dave, Sky3 and Film4 and is free when taken with a Virgin Phone line for £11.99 a month. For an extra £5.50 a month, the M package can be upgraded to M+, which adds another 20 channels including Sky1, LIVING, and Movies 24. The L TV package gives you 100 channels including MTV One and the Discovery Channel and costs £11 a month with a Virgin Phone line. The premium XL package costs £23 a month with a Virgin Phone line and gives you access to 160 digital TV channels.

Virgin Media TV XL also comes with Virgin TV Choice On Demand, which gives you thousands of your favourite shows and series, to watch whenever you want. All Virgin Media TV packages come with Catch Up TV - a catch-up service which allows you to watch programmes from the BBC, Channel 4, ITV and more that have been broadcast over the last seven days.

All Virgin Media TV packages come with the V Box set top box which provides access to Virgin Media TV channels. Also available is the V+ HD Box, a Personal Video Recorder (PVR) which allows you to watch one programme whilst recording two others, pause and rewind live TV and enjoy programmes in pin sharp crystal clear high definition (HD) picture and surround sound. The V+ HD Box costs £75, and customers on Virgin Media TV M, M+ or L pay an additional £5 a month on top of their Virgin Media TV package. This fee is waived for Virgin Media TV XL subscribers, but the one-off £75 set up fee remains.

Virgin Media User Reviews

I have been a Virgin Media customer for some time now and have found the service to be pretty good value for money. I opted for the VIP bundle option and most of the services are up most of the time (98% or so). The only downside of Virgin Media is the lack of full HD services, they don't currently provide HD Sky Sports or HD Sky Movies (and a few others). Hopefully Virgin will secure a deal soon to provide these services because this would be a big plus for me personally!

What is Virgin Media TV?

Virgin Media is the sole provider of digital cable TV in the UK. Virgin Media TV packages are available on a subscription basis only. As Virgin Media's TV channels are delivered down a fibre optic cable you will need to pay £11 a month line rental to receive them. Virgin Media TV packages are grouped into four separate subscriptions, M, M+, L and XL. As well as these four subscription packages, you can sign up for additional premium content including Sky Sports and Sky Movies and access a selection of movies on demand from PictureBox, Bollywood and Movies on Demand. Virgin Media also features the TV Choice On Demand package which allows you to watch top TV series from the BBC, Channel 4, Living and more and the Catch Up TV platform, which gives you access to a range of the most popular programmes from the last 7 days.

How can I get Virgin Media TV?

As Virgin Media TV channels are broadcast via fibre optic cable, in order to sign up you need to live in a cabled street. You can usually tell if a street has had cable installed by the green plastic tubing which is sometimes visible on the edges of pavement, or by the presence of a small grey cabinet about a couple of feet in height. You'll need to sign up for a Virgin Phone line in order to receive Virgin Media TV channels. A Virgin Phone line costs £11 a month. As well as giving you access to digital cable TV, a Virgin Phone line also comes with inclusive calls to fixed-line UK numbers (01, 02 and 03) and the option to sign up for high-speed broadband services.

As well as having access to a fibre optic cable, you will need to pick from two Virgin Media set top box receivers. The standard Virgin Media set top box connects your TV to the fibre optic cable and comes with an interactive programme guide allowing you to plan ahead for the week's viewing. The high definition (HD) compatible V+ HD box allows you to access a range of channels in HD and allows you to pause, record and rewind programmes for later viewing. The Virgin Media V+ HD box also allows you to record up to two channels simultaneously whilst watching another - perfect for busy households where people want to record multiple channels at once.
